Taking the Happiness Journal Challenge: Ubiquity Retirement + Savings

When Ruby began our Happiness Journal challenge three years ago, we didn’t expect the tremendous impact the experiment would have on employee happiness and productivity. Since then, the story of our little experiment has made its way around the Internet, and other companies have taken on the challenge with their own employees. Here is one such example from Ubiquity Retirement + Savings, who was kind enough to share their story with us.

Since 1999, Ubiquity Retirement + Savings (formerly The Online 401(k)) has worked to build a company culture focused on happiness and cultivating joy. Our company, which provides cost-effective and quality retirement plans for micro business, encourages employees to find their inner hero and bring that positivity into client interactions. We’re always on the lookout for new ideas on how to breed happiness in our office, which is how we came across Ruby’s Happiness Journal.

Carrie Brandes, our awesome Vice President of People & Culture, is always raving about author Shawn Achor. When she read the article about Ruby’s success in launching his ideas company-wide, we asked ourselves—why can’t we do that? We decided to jump in and give it a shot. First, we laid out our main goals:

– Drive up engagement within the whole company, particularly remote workers (who make up 50% of our workforce)

– Increase participation in our new internal message board, Namely

As strong believers in the science behind happy workers, we didn’t use incentives for the program. Additionally, we set up the challenge so employees didn’t have to complete all three questions, but instead comment on one.

The first few days were probably the most challenging. Some were a little hesitant to try something new, while others became frustrated overthinking what to post. Once we got over the initial hump, however, we couldn’t make the initial call to action post fast enough! Employees were posting to the board as soon as they logged on.

Participating in the challenge has had a positive impact on our company. We’ve become closer, both those working in-person and our virtual employees, and have learned a great deal about each other. We truly are a family.
