Ruby Client Spotlight: Justin Rockwell & OIR Interactive

Today, we’re chatting with Justin Rockwell, owner of OIR Interactive, an interactive marketing agency based in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. OIR Interactive is the developer behind TextBoard, a robust, web-based platform that helps marketers quickly create, maintain and analyze SMS marketing programs.

Here is Justin’s quick take on mobile marketing and life as an entrepreneur…

Tell us about OIR Interactive

OIR Interactive provides a suite of interactive marketing services, including web site design, complex application development, search engine optimization, pay-per-click campaign management, and email marketing. In recent years we have become focused on mobile marketing, specializing in mobile sites, applications, and text message marketing.

Texboard is OIR’s proprietary application for mobile marketing — how does it work?

TextBoard is an application we built to allow our clients to run two-way texting campaigns. This enables businesses to send promotions and offers directly to people who opt into a campaign. You may have seen a message on TV that says, for example, “Text CAR to 55958,” and promises the consumer something in exchange. This application is what makes all of that work. TextBoard is an SMS marketing application designed specifically for marketers, broadcasters and multi-location retailers.

Large companies often run mobile marketing programs — can small businesses with limited marketing dollars also run effective campaigns?

Mobile marketing offers a perfect opportunity for businesses to communicate with their current and future customers in a personal, non-intrusive manner. Mobile marketing, especially text messaging, also lets customers choose which offers to receive and when to stop. Individual consumer control results in extremely high participation and conversion rates. Mobile advertising is surprisingly inexpensive and can be very effective if executed correctly. There are multiple tools to help you with building mobile-friendly websites for little or no money — and text message campaigns can be run for as little as $0.04 per outgoing message.

What inspires you as an entrepreneur?

It’s inspiring to be able to take control of my destiny. I can develop my ideas and applications in whatever ways I think will work best. And I love being my own boss. I’ve worked for other people before in the technology field, but I learned quickly that entrepreneurs keep our society moving forward and that developing my own ideas would be more rewarding for me.

What is your favorite part of your job?

With TextBoard, I am the one pushing the capabilities of mobile marketing. I love that. To be able to sit back and see the work I do affect an entire industry is very rewarding.

How has having Ruby’s virtual receptionist service affected your business day-to-day?

Ruby has been a lifesaver, which you can read about in the TextBoard blog. TextBoard has experienced tremendous growth recently, and I haven’t been able to keep up with incoming calls because I’m busy in other meetings or programming a new project. More importantly, Ruby has helped me to relax and not stress about missing a call. You never know which phone call could be that client who will take your business to the next level. I appreciate being able to take care of my clients and tend to projects, confident that Ruby will represent my company reliably and professionally.
